The Benefits of Massage Therapy

There are those that look forward to receiving a massage and those that will never experience therapeutic touch because of little understanding of the benefits behind massage therapy. This alternative treatment has been a way of life dating as far back as the Egyptians. The human body obtains 12 systems to maintain proper body function and through research, we now know that massage therapy has shown positive effects on these systems.

When we think of massage, we think of relaxation but, what causes this effect? Through therapeutic touch we stimulate our Central Nervous System which consist of the brain and spinal cord that leads to the Peripheral Nervous System which is divided into two systems. Our Somatic System which controls our voluntary movements better known as our skeletal muscles and our Autonomic System which controls our involuntary or visceral bodily functions which consist of our cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive functions, respiratory and glands. Within our autonomic system, it is yet divided into two more systems. These systems are the Sympathetic System, which allows our bodies to function under stress and stimulates our fight or flight responses and the Parasympathetic System which regulates activities while the body is at rest and stimulates digestion. These two systems stimulate our Endocrine System which regulate our glands and release hormones. Our body produces its own chemicals, like serotonin and endorphins and uses them to control certain functions.

Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter primarily found in the gastrointestinal tract, where it is used to regulate intestinal movement. Within our central nervous system, it regulates mood, appetite, sleep patterns and muscle contraction. Its cognitive functions promote memory and learning. At the synapse, it works as an antidepressant. Serotonin is also found in the blood platelets where it serves as a vasoconstrictor and helps to regulate homeostasis.

Endorphins are endogenous opioid peptides that function as neurotransmitters. They are often called the body's natural pain relievers. Endorphins are biochemical substances made by the body that reduce pain and bring about a feeling of euphoria and well-being.

The body is amazing because through proper diet, exercise and massage it can heal itself. These are just a couple of benefits behind massage therapy. I hope that I've enlightened you to come in and experience it for yourself.

Until then, good day!
