How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly
into the BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medication that is injected into muscles to relieve the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows, laugh lines around the mouth, and other areas of the face.
BOTOX works by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses to the muscles, reducing muscle activity which can cause frown lines and furrows to develop on the skin. Your doctor will determine exactly where the BOTOX injections should be administered, in an effort to provide optimum results for you.
When BOTOX is administered by a registered healthcare professional, the injections are localized, and do not have any effect on the patient's ability to show expression. BOTOX Cosmetic is completely safe to use, and is FDA approved.
What Are The Common Side Effects?
With any prescription medication, there can be some mild to moderate side effects. The most common side effects with the BOTOX Cosmetic are: Dry mouth, pain or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, nausea, or neck pain.
Certain patients have also reported some temporary eye problems, such as drooping of the lid, decreased, blurred, or double-vision, or dryness. If you develop a side effect from the BOTOX Cosmetic that is bothersome or persistent, you are encouraged to contact your doctor right away.
Is There Any Chance of Developing Serious Side Effects?
Although serious side effects are rare with BOTOX, certain ones have been reported by a few patients. They can include serious heart issues, or severe allergic reactions. Other unusual symptoms have rarely been reported, such as difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of developing serious side effects.
Please contact your doctor immediately if you develop a serious side effect after receiving a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment.
What is the Treatment Like?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, relatively painless procedure, consisting of a few tiny injections. No anesthesia is required, although it may be determined, at the time of your appointment, that either a cold pack or an anesthetic cream may be used prior to having the injections. During your visit, doctor will assess your needs, and determine exactly where you need BOTOX administered to achieve optimum results.
The procedure is typically completed in 10 minutes or less, and patients require no downtime. There may be brief and minimal discomfort once the procedure is complete. Pain or tenderness at the injection site, swelling, redness, bleeding or bruising may be caused by the injection. In some cases, infection may occur.
Who is Being Treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Men and women of all ages, with varying skin types and tones, have been successfully treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Because the medicine only affects the underlying muscles, it does not typically affect the tone of your skin.
The results from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) 2006 statistics report speak for themselves:
- BOTOX® Cosmetic was the most popular physician-administered cosmetic procedure in the United States for the fifth year in a row (surgical and nonsurgical combined) with nearly 3.2 million treatments in 2006.
- Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 22% of all physician-administered cosmetic procedures.
- Men accounted for nearly 1 million physician-administered cosmetic procedures.
- Patients ages 19 to 34 accounted for 22% of all physician-administered cosmetic procedures.
Will I Still Be Able To Make Facial Expressions?
Once you've had a BOTOX Cosmetic procedure, you will notice a significant improvement in the deep furrows and lines on your face.
Since the nerves that control the muscles at the injection sites will be relaxed, you will still have the ability to make normal facial expressions without the appearance of wrinkles and creases.
How Soon Will I See a Difference?
Visible results will occur within days of the procedure, and a marked improvement in the furrows and creases between your eyebrows will continue for up to a week. Although individual results may vary, some results have been reported to last up to four months.
Schedule a follow-up appointment for treatment as soon as the results begin to fade. Your doctor can discuss with you exactly what to expect from each treatment.
How Do I Know if BOTOX® Cosmetic is Right for Me?
If you are a man or woman, between the ages of 18 and 65, who has developed moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), you may be a considered a perfect candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Consult with your doctor to see if BOTOX is the right treatment for you.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Expensive?
The myth that BOTOX is only for the rich and famous is absolutely unfounded. BOTOX is very affordable.
So much so, that the average client who is administered BOTOX treatments are working mothers between the ages of 40 to 55, and the average income of 44% of most BOTOX users, according to the 2005 ASERF BOTOX® Cosmetic Use Survey, is less than $100,000.
